How To Build Your Own Time Capsule

How To Build Your Own Time Capsule

It's officially summer!! When I think about summer, I think of nonstop fun. There are so many fun things my family and I love to do during the summer. We night fish, camp, ride the inner-tube behind the boat, swim, catch lighting bugs, and so much more. If you'll notice all these activities are outdoors, and unfortunately it rains a lot here in the summer. We don't let just the rain stop us from having fun, however if that rain is accompanied by thunder and lightening it does.

Here is an activity for those days that you can't get outside.

Time Capsule

What you'll need:

  • A time capsule (you can use a jar with lid, coffee can with lid, whatever you have laying around that has a lid you can tighten up)
  • Photos, coins, anything that you want to give yourself in the future (nothing of high value)
  • Scissors
  • craft supplies (construction paper, glue, ribbon, etc) to decorate time capsule

Instructions:

1. Decorate time capsule however you want. That's if you even want to decorate it, but it's more fun to make it pretty.

2. Place items such as photos and coins in your time capsule along with a note to yourself with the time, date, your age, and any other information you would like to add. Close the lid on your jar and place it in a plastic bag.

3. Now find a place in your yard to bury it. Just don't forget where you put it. I suggest near a tree or some other land mark.

You now have a time capsule. You can go back and dig it up in a few years to see the things you put in it. You will be surprised how interesting it is to look back at those memories. The most interesting thing you will look at will be your photos and handwriting.

MILLION DOLLAR SPAGHETTI

MILLION DOLLAR SPAGHETTI

Traditional Spaghetti with a twist. I wasn't so sure about this at first when Emma found the recipe, but we tried it and it was so good.

What you'll need:

8 ounces cream cheese
¼ cup sour cream
1 cup cottage cheese
½ cup butter
1 (16 oz) package spaghetti
8 ounces grated cheddar cheese
Spaghetti sauce
1lb ground beef
¼ cup grated onion

What to do:

Preheat the oven to 350 degrees F.
in a large skillet brown the ground beef over medium-high heat while breaking the meat up into chunks with a spatula. Drain off any excess grease. Add in the grated onion and cook for an additional 2 minutes.Add spaghetti sauce to ground beef.

Meanwhile, cook the noodles according to package directions until al dente. Drain and set aside. In a medium bowl combine the cream cheese, sour cream, and cottage cheese until well blended.
Put about 4 thin slices of butter onto the bottom of a 9 x 13 inch baking dish. Place half of the spaghetti noodles on top of the butter slices. Spread the cream cheese mixture evenly over the top of the noodles. Place the remaining half of the noodles over the cream cheese mixture and top with 4 more thin slices of butter. Place the spaghetti sauce over the top of the noodles and butter.
Place into the oven and bake at 350 degrees F. for 30 minutes. After 30 minutes, remove the casserole from the oven and spread a layer of the cheddar cheese evenly on top. Return to the oven and bake for 10-15 minutes or until the cheese has melted.

10 Home Remedies You Need to Know

10 Home Remedies You Need to Know
As a mother I don't like to grab medicines when my girls are sick. I try using a more natural approach first. Most of the time it will work, but as you know it always depends on what the problem is to begin with.

Sore Throat- gargle salt water,  has been a great way to relieve the pain of an aching throat for a long time. Add 1 Tbsp. table salt to a cup of warm water, gargle and spit. popsicles and sherbert help too

Pink Eye/ Eye Infection– A few drops of breast milk in the infected eye several times a day can cure some babies eye issues. If breast milk is not available moistened chamomile tea bags applied to the eye several times a day for several days can work as well.

Cough- Combine juice from ½ a lemon and 2-3 Tbsp. of raw honey, warmed in the microwave sip as needed to soothe coughs

Lice– Saturate hair with mayonnaise, pile it on top of your child’s head and let it sit for as long as your child will tolerate (2 hours if possible) Pick up a lice comb from the pharmacy and comb thoroughly every couple days. Repeat as needed. Rinse hair with vinegar often to avoid getting lice.

Headache/Sinus Pressure- Lavender or Peppermint essential oil either inhaled or applied topically to the temples or bottom of skull. Peppermint dilates blood vessels and gets blood pumping while lavender relaxes you.

Bug Bites– Make a paste of baking soda and water, apply to the bite and allow it to sit and remove the sting. Witch Hazel and Tea Tree Oil are said to relieve pain and itching from bites as well. For Mosquito bites apply a frozen spoon to the bite to stop the itching.

Swimmer’s Ear- Use a mixture of ½ alcohol and ½ vinegar as a preventative for ear infections, put 1 drop in each ear before swimming. Do not use if you have an active ear infection.

Plantar Warts– Tape a piece of banana over top of warts, within a few days the wart falls right off.

Sunburns- Aloe Vera applied to red sunburned skin offers quick, mild relief. Aloe plants are very easy to grow and are a must have in every yard.

Fever –  fluids, a luke warm bath, and two pair socks soaked in apple cider vinegar placed on feet and around wrists can help reduce fevers below 102 by a few degrees anything higher or that won't go away should be brought to a physicians attention

The Balloon Experiment

The Balloon Experiment

Chemical reactions are important to learn because they can be dangerous, but they can also be fun to watch! Your kids will love this experiment because it shows them a chemical reaction in action while demonstrating the power that such a reaction can have. As a result, they will be encouraged to explore the way in which other materials react to one another. This experiment isn't dangerous but will show them that combining chemicals causes reactions which in return can be dangerous. So be sure to stress that part while going through this experiment with them.

What you'll need:

  • Soda Bottle
  • Balloon
  • Water (A little over 2.5 tablespoons)
  •  Vinegar
  • Straw
  • Baking Soda (1 Teaspoon)
Instructions:

Start by stretching the balloons out, making it easier for them to fill with carbon dioxide once the chemical reaction begins.
Next, have your kids pour a little over two and a half tablespoons of water into the soda bottle. As you prepare the baking soda, also have your children get ready to attach the balloon.
After the water is in the bottle, add a teaspoon of baking soda and mix it with the straw. When the baking soda has dissolved, add the vinegar.
Immediately after pouring, have your kids attach the balloon to the mouth of the soda bottle. As the chemical reaction takes place, the balloon will inflate with carbon dioxide. Talk to your kids about how chemical reactions form. In this case, the reaction is between basic (water) and acidic (vinegar) substances.
This activity will show your kids how chemical reactions take place while demonstrating the power that they hold

The Study of Ants Science Experiment

The Study of Ants
Science Experiments we use as a homeschool family.
In some ways, ants are a lot like humans. That is, they tend to have a particular destination in mind, and they can keep track of where their going . They know what turns to take, they can remember where to walk and what to avoid, and they know their way back home. Observing ant behavior is a fun and easy way for kids to learn about how insects act. This experiment also provides a safe way for kids to involve themselves in the activity and see if they can influence the ants’ behavior.

What you'll need:

  •  Ants!
  • Ant Bait (the jar of a lid with some honey or sugar water)
  • Obstruction (a building block, small book, small piece of wood)
  • Journal
Instructions:

The first thing you’ll need to do is find some ants and determine their path. Chances are, they’ll be moving back and forth between their anthill and some kind of food source. In warm weather, finding ants should not be difficult! Take your child to where the ants are and simply watch them for a while.
Ask your child where the ants are coming from, where they’re headed, and what they seem to be doing. Make notice of how they seem to know and remember their path so well!
Next, set your ant bait nearby. Watch what they do. More than likely, one ant will go investigate it, report back to the others, and then lead more of them to where the bait is set! Have your child observe the ants’ behavior carefully; then, set the obstacle in the way. Watch how the ants react, and see how long it takes them to find a new path.
After a while, remove the obstruction and then see what happens! Talk with your child about the ants’ behavior, and note how magnificently they remember their routes and find new paths when they are obstructed.
Use the journal to keep notes about what's happening along the way.

Cheesy Broccoli Soup

Cheesy Broccoli Soup

This recipe is super easy and so good. I like to double the recipe for leftovers.

What you'll need:

1 tablespoon butter
1/2 onion chopped
1/4 butter melted
1/4 cup flour
2 cup milk for thinner soup or 2 cups heavy cream for a thicker soup
2 cups chicken broth
1 1/2 cups chopped broccoli
2 1/2 cups shredded cheddar cheese (we prefer sharp in this)
8 oz block of Velveeta cheese cubed
salt and pepper to taste

What to do:

  1. Melt 1 tablespoon butter in a skillet over medium-high heat. Saute onion in hot butter until translucent, about 5 minutes. Set aside.
  2. Whisk 1/4 cup melted butter and flour together in a large saucepan over medium-low heat; cook until flour loses it's granular texture, adding 1 to 2 tablespoons of milk if necessary to keep the flour from burning, 3 to 4 minutes.
  3. Gradually pour milk into flour mixture while whisking constantly. Stir chicken broth into milk mixture. Bring to a simmer; cook until flour taste is gone and mixture is thickened, about 20 minutes. Add broccoli, and sauteed onion; simmer until vegetables are tender, about 20 minutes.
  4. Stir Cheddar cheese and Velveeta cheese into vegetable mixture until cheese melts. Season with salt and pepper to taste.
